LINCOLN, Neb. – Crime in the town of Whiteclay, Neb., which sells some four million cans of beer and malt liquor annually, almost entirely to Oglala Sioux Tribe members from the dry Pine Ridge Reservation, is not Nebraska’s responsibility, said Ashley Cradduck, spokeswoman for the state’s governor, Dave Heineman, a Republican. “The Indians are coming from Pine Ridge, and that’s in South Dakota.” (more…)

Weary of massive alcohol sales in the small border town of Whiteclay, two state senators introduced bills Wednesday aimed at alleviating social and health ills.

State senators Russ Karpisek of Wilber and LeRoy Louden of Ellsworth introduced bills that would fund substance abuse treatment, economic development, health care and law enforcement for Native people. (more…)

Senator: Limit alcohol sold near Pine Ridge reservation

A state senator suggested limiting the amount of alcohol sold in Whiteclay during a legislative hearing held Friday to determine whether more should be done to address alcohol sales and use there.

LINCOLN — The state has a moral obligation to restrict or end alcohol sales in the border town of Whiteclay.

Nebraska Legislature to examine issues in White Clay

Sheridan County has the distinction of raising more tax revenue from the sale of alcohol than the rest of the counties in the state of Nebraska combined. The source of this revenue is the tiny town of White Clay population 17. A one mile stretch of road immediately south of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, White Clay is home to four beer stores which thrive on sales from Pine Ridge residents where alcohol is prohibited.

Recently a resolution was introduced in the General Affairs Committee of the Nebraska Legislature regarding a number of issues and concerns relating to conditions in White Clay. (more…)
