LINCOLN, Neb. – Crime in the town of Whiteclay, Neb., which sells some four million cans of beer and malt liquor annually, almost entirely to Oglala Sioux Tribe members from the dry Pine Ridge Reservation, is not Nebraska’s responsibility, said Ashley Cradduck, spokeswoman for the state’s governor, Dave Heineman, a Republican. “The Indians are coming from Pine Ridge, and that’s in South Dakota.” (more…)

Tribal police break up alcohol blockade

WHITECLAY, Neb. — At least four activists were arrested Thursday during a struggle between Oglala Sioux Tribal police and protestors attempting to set up a blockade to keep people from bringing alcohol from Whiteclay, Neb., into Pine Ridge Village.

Both sides started out Thursday with what they said was a common goal of keeping alcohol off the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation where it has long been illegal. (more…)

Rushville, Neb. – Nine American Indian activists arrested earlier this summer during a standoff at a border village with state troopers are taking their fight to the courts.

Rather than enter pleas Tuesday in Sheridan County Court, the group – including noted activist Russell Means – filed papers challenging Nebraska’s jurisdiction in their misdemeanor criminal cases. (more…)

PINE RIDGE, S.D. — For years after returning to the rolling hills of his Lakota homeland, John Means battled a darkness worse than Vietnam.

Sometimes without warning, he would sink into horrible depressions. The doctors called it post traumatic stress disorder. When it happened, the Purple Heart recipient often sought solace from an aluminum can or a green bottle, and just as often he would sink even deeper into the darkness.

But somehow, John Means would always re-emerge. Time after time, he fought setback after setback, and he rebuilt part of his life. (more…)
