NWU hosts screening of Whiteclay documentary, experts to discuss town’s controversy

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

Published November 6, 2008

LINCOLN, Neb. — In recognition of Native American History Month and the approaching 10-year anniversary of a monumental march on Whiteclay, three experts on the controversial town will share their stories and discuss solutions to the place dubbed by some as “Skid Row on the Prairie” at an upcoming Nebraska Wesleyan University panel discussion.

Mark Vasina, director of the documentary The Battle for Whiteclay; journalist Stew Magnuson, author of The Death of Raymond Yellow Thunder: And Other True Stories From the Nebraska-Pine Ridge Border Towns; and Indian activist Frank LaMere, who worked to stop illegal flow of alcohol on the Pine Ridge Reservation, will provide a panel discussion on Saturday, November 15 at Olin B Lecture Hall on the Nebraska Wesleyan campus.

The panel discussion will follow a screening of The Battle for Whiteclay, which begins at 11:30 a.m. The panel will begin at approximately 1:30 p.m.

Whiteclay has been thrust into the national spotlight for its role in supplying the nearby Pine Ridge Indian Reservation with alcohol. Four stores in Whiteclay sell nearly four million cans of beer each year to the reservation where alcohol sales and possession are illegal. Despite attempts to fix the area’s struggle with alcohol, the issues have yet to be resolved.

Olin B Lecture Hall is located inside the Olin Hall of Science, near 50th Street and St. Paul Ave. The screening and panel discussion are free and open to the public.
