Minnechaduza Foundation to host Whiteclay film and speakers in Valentine, Neb.

The Minnechaduza Foundation is hosting two  meetings featuring several films on Thursday nights in Valentine:
-  July 23: The Battle for Whiteclay, with guests Mark Vasina (filmmaker) and Frank LaMere (Native activist)
-  July 30:  net’s Your Kids Are Drinking plus Think B4U Wink
Screenings will begin at 6:30pm at the Yucca Dune building at 1st and Hall in Valentine, Neb.

When Mark Vasina first agreed to do a documentary about the problems in Whiteclay and the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, he thought he would be finished within a year.

Instead, Vasina spent five years shooting footage for the film “The Battle for Whiteclay.” (more…)

Film showings document struggle for self determination

On April 28, an overflow crowd packed a coffee shop screening of “Battle for Whiteclay,” hosted by the South Dakota ANSWER Coalition (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism). The film documents the struggle of the residents of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota and their allies to shut down four predatory liquor stores across the border in Whiteclay, Neb. It features Native American activists Frank LaMere, Duane Martin, Sr. and Russell Means. (more…)

Midland Lutheran to screen documentary on Whiteclay controversy

Midland Lutheran College will show the documentary film “The Battle for Whiteclay” Thursday, May 14, at 6 p.m. in the college’s Olson Student Center.

Town’s beer stores ‘export … misery to Pine Ridge’

A documentary coming to Sioux Falls next week chronicles a situation one Nebraskan describes as “genocide” that continues today on the South Dakota-Nebraska border.

“The Battle for Whiteclay” aims to depict how alcohol has ravaged Pine Ridge families for generations and – eventually – to shutter four Nebraska businesses that sell huge amounts of beer to reservation residents.

The film will be shown at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Black Sheep Coffee House, 1007 W. 11th St. (more…)
